Today: A Handwritten Font for Timeless Branding

I was sitting at my desk, staring at a blank brand board, when I first came across Today. It wasn’t the usual font I would reach for—it had a softness, a warmth, and a personality that felt just right for the project I was working on. The client wanted a visual identity for a new boutique that specialized in handmade soaps and candles. Something elegant but approachable, something that could speak to both luxury and comfort.

Today immediately caught my eye. It’s an enchanting handwritten font, with delicate curves and a natural flow that gave it a personal, almost storybook feel. I could see it being used on packaging, labels, and even social media posts. But I needed to test it out before committing to it as the main typeface for the brand.

First Impressions and Initial Mockups

I started by placing Today on a simple logo mockup. The word “Bloom” stood out beautifully against a soft pastel background. The handwritten feel of the font made it feel like a personal message from the brand itself. It wasn’t too ornate or difficult to read, which was important for a brand that wanted to be inviting and easy to connect with.

I also tried it on a product label mockup. The font looked great on a small scale, maintaining its charm without becoming cluttered. I noticed that the spacing between letters was well-balanced, which helped keep the text legible even when scaled down.

Testing Across Different Media

One of the things I love about Today is how versatile it is. I tested it across various formats—print and digital—and it always maintained its character. On a business card, it felt intimate and personal. On a website header, it added a touch of elegance without overwhelming the design.

For social media graphics, I used it in short-form text like captions and quotes. The font worked perfectly for that kind of content, where a little whimsy can go a long way. I also experimented with using it alongside other fonts to see how it paired. When combined with a clean sans serif font, it created a nice contrast that kept the overall design balanced.

Readability and Brand Perception

As a designer, readability is always a concern. I made sure to check how Today performed in different sizes and colors. It didn’t lose its appeal when scaled up or down, and it remained legible even in smaller text. This made it ideal for use in logos, headlines, and call-to-action buttons.

The mood and personality of Today played a big role in shaping the brand perception. It gave the boutique a warm, inviting vibe that aligned perfectly with the client’s vision. Customers would instantly feel like they were stepping into a space that was both luxurious and comforting.

Font Pairing and Design Assets

I found that Today worked best as a display font and headline font. It wasn’t meant to be used for large blocks of text, but it shone in short-form messaging. For body copy, I paired it with a clean serif font to ensure readability while keeping the overall design cohesive.

When it came to design assets, I made sure to check the available styles and alternates. The font included several variations that allowed me to fine-tune the look depending on the context. I also checked the file formats and commercial licensing to ensure that it would be suitable for all the client’s needs—from printed materials to digital templates.

Another thing I appreciated was the multilingual support. Even though the boutique’s primary language was English, knowing that the font could be used in other languages made it more versatile for future expansions or collaborations.

Practical Advice for Using Today

If you’re considering using Today for your next project, I recommend testing it in different contexts before finalizing your brand system. Try it on a logo draft, a product label, and a website header to see how it performs in real-world scenarios.

Also, think about how it pairs with other fonts. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations to find the perfect balance. And remember, while Today has a charming, handwritten feel, it still needs to work within the framework of your overall design.

Whether you're designing for a boutique, a skincare brand, or a creative studio, Today can bring a unique touch to your projects. It’s not just a font—it’s a storytelling tool that can help your brand connect with its audience in a meaningful way.
